Tax Season in Canada 2021: Things You Must Know

The kickoff for 2021 filing season is due on February 22, 2021, which means all the eligible taxpayers have to create and maintain the latest report of their transactions.

For most Canadians, the last date for filing taxes is on April 30, 2021. The deadline extends for the people who are self-employed or have a partner/spouse who is self-employed until June 15, 2021.

Since the year 2020 pertained to be a roller-coaster of a ride as the Coronavirus wreaked havoc throughout the world, the Canada Revenue Agency decided to move the tax filing deadline for individuals from April 30 to June 1st. The CRA also made a penalty-free extension for Canadians to pay their taxes until September 30, 2020.

As of now, it is not clear whether the agency would make the same changes in 2021 as well. Therefore, you must prepare to file your return and pay your taxes by April 30, 2021.

Besides getting your tax refunds on time, you should be mindful of filing your taxes on time to avoid monetary penalties and delays or negative effects on your government benefits. For instance, the inability to file taxes on time could result in the revocation of Canada Child Benefit and GST/HST Credit.
